My Weekend In Pictures (and words) + A Timbuktu Catastrophe!!!

Thursday

The kids are back from their holiday!!!

And thank goodness for that, as they are the only ones who could have helped me with the mega-Timbuktu catastrophe I encountered this weekend.

For a while now, Greta Timbuktu's belly has been protruding and she ALWAYS seems to be nodding off to sleep. I often wondered about this, because it's truly weird..its almost impossible to carry out even a short conversation with Greta.

Greta Timbuktu

Lemme give you an example of what chatting with her feels like:

Me: "Hi Greta, I'm going to be out all day...any idea what you guys are up to today?"

Greta: *in her thick German accent* "I think I'm going to scrub..."*loud snoring*

Me: *bewildered* Greta! Greta!! Na wa oooooo!!!

GET MTV AFRICA & ZAIN TO CHANGE THE MAMA'S SLOGAN....SIGN THE PETITION

On Thursday, with Bade, Lande and Rrroooott (pronounced 'rrrrooottt' even though her name is Ruth) as witnesses, the mystery has finally been solved.

At 10pm on Thursday 26th August, 2010, Greta Timbuktu was delivered of a bouncing baby boy right on my bed!! Apparently, not even Mr. Timbuktu was aware that she was expecting.

She thought the rest of her family knew she was pregnant, and was even quite irritated at everyone's surprise. Timbuktu acknowledged that there was something she always kept trying to tell him, but would doze off before she could get to.

Nevertheless, Mr. Timbuktu is the proudest father in the world right now!!

Friday

Working Friday all the way!! Took Gigi out for a spin late at night to go pick up some Chinese food for my starving family!!

Also had to eat quite a bit to convince my sisters that my recent loss of appetite is not self-induced!

LOL...as in I can't even believe they think I'm starving myself on purpose!!

Saturday

It was the Bestie's Introduction!!

An Introduction is when a man's family formally comes to make their intentions of marrying a woman for their son, known to her family.

So they bring lots of goodies and plenty, plenty CASH to come and 'introduce' themselves to her family.

USE YOUR VOICE WISELY....SIGN THE PETITION

I think I'm the worst Chief-Bridesmaid ever!! As in what kind of maid of Honor is late for the Introduction?!

Seun Oplaleye and Fiance, Zeal Akaraiwe

The eyeing Seun gave me as I walked in late could have transformed me into a pile of vomit!! But I soon wormed my way back into her heart, by making sure she and her fiance's glasses were constantly 'spiked' with vodka!!

If only the Elders there knew that's what we were up to...LOL

This would be my 3rd time being a Maid of Honor...and I think I sucked majorly both times!! HELP..I want to be the best MOH this time!! Tips anyone?!

Stayed up working till about 3am, while also enjoying some old albums I used to LOVE!! John Legend's 'Get Lifted' and R Kelly's 'Chocolate Factory'!!

I almost sang my friend who was working late with me, to INSANITY!!

Sunday

Lazed in bed till mid-afternoon, when I had to crawl out to go support my girl, Lois.

Former Model, Lois Adevokhai was having the very first Casting Call for her November 18th Modelling Agency, at Ember Creek on Awolowo Road.

Lois Adevokhai

November 18th is soooo going to transform the Business of Model Recruitment and Talent Management in this town...I can feel it!! Lois' immaculate attention to detail and sharp eye for quality are priceless qualities.

Had to dash out of there pretty quick though, as a certain Producer (you know yourself) was trying to spring WORK on me right there and then!! I sha escaped...

Went to show Wonuola Odunsi some love at Le Petit Marche, which was holding at GET Arena...

Was immediately confronted by this SEXY laptop bag by Juliet David-West's JIDZ as soon as i arrived there...

But unfortunately, some very sharp person had paid for it already!! JIDZ has some really SICK hand-made bags...you definitely should check her out!! (07062279484, 08056196619)

It seems WORK was determined to follow me everywhere yesterday...what are the odds that I'd bump into my 360Nobs Boss-Man...

Noble Igwe

Noble sooooo owes me a Strawberry Margarita...he knows what I'm talking about...419!!

Damilola Olaiya & Joke Adepase

Oyindamola Fakeye

Oyinda is starting a Burlesque Class ...I'm sooo excited!! Can't wait for the 2nd of September, when I shall go and make a major fool of myself at her class!!

It's open to EVERYONE...so I guess you can come laugh at me.

Had a very much needed BEING session with Tones at 'The Balcony' later!! I've missed having those!

Since in recent times, I've become a Church Truant, Tones preached the entire sermon from her Church that morning, to me!!

It was about breaking boundaries and limitations, beginning from the mind!! We talked about sooo much, and both shuddered as we imagined about what our lives would have been like if we didn't have a relationship with God.

I left 'The Balcony' feeling very inspired and empowered!! I had also shed a couple of pounds laughing hysterically at Tones and her Man's traumatised reactions to my impulsive singing...it was a great evening!!

I left Tones and went to check out the new Live Band at Base Lounge...

Singer & Tari (Me)

The popular Sharp Band is now LIVE every Sunday at Base Lounge, Silverbird Galleria, Victoria Island. You might know Sharp Band as the in-house Band for M-Net's Comedy Club, Lagos.

The Chink In My Armour

I have come to realise more and more with each day that passes, that the secret to standing strong in the glare of Public Criticism, is being non-reactive to all feedback - positive and negative.

Naturally, the positive evokes good feelings from within us, and makes us feel pretty good about our skill, and generally about ourselves.

The negative on the other hand, has the directly reverse effect. Like a guided missile, it targets the very core of our self-esteem, with a precise assignment to destroy.

I have been hit regularly by the arrow in the past, and it usually left me for days on end doubting my skill, my value, and ultimately, myself.

It was in one moment of clarity that I realised that my value as a Writer and as a Human Being, was not dependent on anyone's judgement or opinion.

Oh...the liberty I experienced in that timeless moment!!

After that, I learned to appreciate the positive feedback with a simple nod and half-smile, while also receiving the negative and downright mean with the same gesture.

The ability to do that is enabled by a simple approach: I have determined my own measure of success for every piece of work that comes from me.

"Does this material meet my standard?" I'd ask myself. Interestingly, there are some material I put out, which even after releasing, I knew deep in my heart it did not measure up to my standard of quality...but everyone would actually RAVE about it!!

At those times, I laugh in the quietness of my heart and silently thank God for the day He released me from the bondage of Public Affirmation.

However, once in a while, I sadly discover that there still exists a chink in my armour. An expectation which gives access to either the rose or the missile.

Then at the point I realise I've been hit, its a little too late. The weakness sets in, the blood oozes out and the seed takes root.

In that moment, I lift up my eyes. I say to the One who girded me in the armour in the first place..."I'm sorry, I misplaced my expectation"

And in His mercy, He uproots the deeply entrenched (and still travelling) root; He stops the flow of blood and seals up the wound. Then He blocks the chink in my armour and sows a new seed in my heart: His seed.

So here I am; brand new all over again!! A fresh armour, a renewed mind and a contented heart.

If you or anyone you know is ever going to thrive in the face of Public (and even Private)Criticism, be sure to take up the FULL armour of God.

The only other option is Drugs, Excessive AlcohoL or any other form of harmful substituted reality. Trust me...I know.

Beware of the chink in your armour.

The Concubine Factor

Reading Elechi Amadi's classic novel 'The Concubine', has reminded me about why I grew in love with Literature in the first place.

Its been such a long time since I was drawn into a novel; into the lives of the characters within, rooting for them and carrying their experiences with me into my own reality.

At some point, I actually began to believe there might be something terribly wrong with me, because I just wasn't enjoying any books!!

Every book which has been raved about recently, I went and bought, but was unable to go beyond the first 5 pages, as the Writer's failed to engage me in those all important moments.

I'm a very impatient Consumer of Literature. I'm that person who would walk out of the Cinema in 10mins, if my attention has not been gripped by then.

I even assume that consumers of my work are as impatient as I am, so I bust my ass in every piece to hold your attention from the very first line and keep it till the end.

But reading 'The Concubine' re-awakened my love for great material. The characters were so alive; their experience so rich, yet simple and relatable.

I could see myself in their thoughts, their struggles; and could mirror my own desires, in their motivations.

Ihuoma: a woman of great moral courage.

I finished the book like two weeks ago, but I still think about her. A timeless and universal Heroine; a globally relevant character, even though her entire experience remained within the back civilisation of an ancient Eastern Nigerian village.

At different points in the story, I put the book down, and challenged some of Elechi Amadi's theories, his perspectives and even the traditions practised and highly esteemed by his characters and their society.

I googled him, to try and get an understanding of his values, so that I could project how he would end the story.

I asked myself, "Is he a Romantic, a Realist or a core Traditionalist?"

After a while, I decided to stop being obsessive and just like every other sane person, wait to see what will happen at the end.

'The Concubine' re-affirmed my belief that some of the greatest stories ever told, have come from the African Writers Series.

Can you ever forget that proud chauvinistic, Man's man called Okonkwo?!

I still cringe at some of his unapologetic actions, but doff my head in admiration at his unwavering stand against the obliteration of his culture, in the face of the greatest challenges.

Literature is all about the communication of stories.

Great stories contain timeless characters, with journeys that transform even the lives of those who are told the stories.

Our classic African Writers told us stories just as they saw them. They did not try to conform to any foreign standards, or bow to the pressure to be a bit more 'Western'.

They documented our Culture shifts, celebrated our African-ness and connected us in the simplicity of our shared heritage and values.

To the Elechi Amadi's, Chinua Achebe's, Ama Ata Aidoo's, Wole Soyinka's and all those rare set of African Literature Giants, known and unknown, who embraced no compromise in their sacred responsibility as Custodians of our Culture, my STANDING OVATION is for you.

WE ARE AFRICANS....Awuuuuuuuuu!!!!!

Two-Timing Tari : Initiating Project Research & Rebellion

All my life, I’ve always thought of myself as one little Rebel.

I have a stubborn inclination within myself to always want to do the exact opposite of what I know I shouldn’t be doing. However, my lifetime of experience in the game of Rebelliousness failed me this past weekend.

This had to be the longest weekend ever!! I had no idea how much a deliberate attempt to keep myself away from Mr. Smooth was going to affect me. My mind was inundated with thoughts of him; memories and flashes from times we’ve spent together. Every single thing I saw, ate, felt, heard and imagined, reminded me of him.

What has that suave son of a gun done to me, I wonder? It was the very last of my willpower that it took to hold me back every single time I thought of him. All I wanted was to escape from my self-imposed prison of Smooth Deprivation, and run over to his lair on the 98.1 frequency, pouring myself at his feet and nuzzling my hair and cheek against his ankle.

I wanted to curl myself up in his side and drink in the fountain of his magnificent scent. I wanted to gaze admiringly into his beautiful eyes as he displayed his extensive knowledge of World Politics, Astronomy, Meta-Physics, Human Relationship Dynamics, World History, Nature and every other subject he so intelligently teaches me about when we’re together.

Oh, how I love the mind of my Mr. Smooth. He knows something about everything. There is no question I ask of him, that he doesn’t give an enlightened answer to. His understanding is like the sand on the sea-shores all around the coast of Lagos.

With tears in my eyes right now, I declare to you that I’m terribly missing him.

But I feel as though I have to do this. Please tell me, is the way I feel about him normal?

Are my responses to him natural?

I’ve NEVER missed the Sunday Brunch tradition that Mr. Smooth and I share; but this Sunday I deliberately kept myself away.

I was a nervous wreck!! Made even more so by the fact that he didn’t even call to find out why I didn’t show up.

Could it be that my earlier suspicion of him not caring about me was right? Am I merely a disposable convenience to Mr. Smooth?

But his eyes say something different when we’re together. The way he looks at me cannot be a lie. His gaze is usually filled with such tenderness toward me, like he would NEVER allow anything hurt me.

I really am confused...

So it was a very welcome escape for me, when Mr. Classic invited me for a ride on a luxury jet he had chartered for the weekend.

I was also slightly surprised, I had no idea Mr. Classic rolled like that. But I asked no questions, simply packed a little Vanity Case and made my way into this Classic Flight.

It was a different side of Mr. Classic I experienced this weekend. Between you and me, I felt he was trying a little to be like Mr. Smooth to me.

When I told him about my affair last week, he did ask me what it was about Mr. Smooth that attracted me to him. I told him; maybe I shouldn’t have, as I now get the feeling that Mr. Classic is trying to be a little Smooth to me.

I’m not quite sure if I’m comfortable with that or not. I kind of like Mr. Classic for the person he is.

Gosh!! Not what I needed at all!! There I was trying to escape from Mr. Smooth, and now I’m trapped on a luxury jet with his Wannabe for what now seemed like a looooonnngg tin!!

I immediately felt guilty pangs after having that thought. Mr. Classic was only making an effort to bring what he imagined was ‘wholeness’ to our relationship. I had hurt him with my infidelity, yet he had forgiven me and is now trying hard, even going out of his comfort zone, to make us work.

I should be ashamed of myself for looking down on him because of that. My heart immediately warmed to him, and I proceeded to give him an experience only the hazy clouds could document, if only they had eyes and ears!!

Needless to say, Mr. Classic was speechless after that; but he soon recovered and chased me all around the empty aircraft, for being such a naughty girl. I hoped the Pilots didn’t mistake our rumbling for turbulence!!

I was sooooo happy to have my REAL Classic Man back!! I squealed delightfully as we laughingly played all over the place. I was so happy!!

After a while, we lay down on the floor and enjoyed the silent humming of the vessel, as it cut across the dark skies like a seasoned Predator.

At that point I remembered that I was supposed to be on a mission with Mr. Classic also. This was not going to be easy, he’s such a sweetheart, and I hate to make him even slightly uncomfortable. Silly me, why would asking him any questions make him uncomfortable?

I’ve practically shared my entire life with him; he knows everything about me, down to the piercings I have...

I turned to face him and rested my head on his shoulder as he drew me close to him. Then I quietly asked:

“What was it like for you growing up?”

He lifted his head, and peered closely at me, looking a little surprised. There was also something in his eyes I’d never seen before.

Then he stood up so abruptly that my head lost its balance and hit the floor with a resounding thud..

To be continued...
Current Location: Bedroom
Issue on Ground: Eemm..norrin mush..just pacing
Current Solutions: Forget solutions for now...just ENJOY...

I really, really love Cece Winans 'Throne Room' album!!

I'm drawn in every single time I listen to it. First time I ever experienced it was like 6-7yrs ago!

I remember, I just used to drive to and from school all caught up in the amazing worship it creates!!

That's one album that few months ago, I actually went to look for the original copy to buy!

The one I had back then was pirated and even got lost. But when I wanted it this year I knew I would be a Biatch if I didn't put some money into Cece's pocket for what I know I will (and have) enjoyed from it.

So now I've reconnected with the experience all over again and this time LEGALLY...Lol

Every song on this album, I carry with me at different points in time..and they're about 15. (Ok there's one I no de too feel sha...and its playing right now)

In this 'Throne Room' album, she's mostly speaking TO God, worshipping Him and telling Him how wonderful He is.

However in the 'Purified' album (which came out after this), she's speaking FROM God. Like she's HIS Voice, telling you and I deep things from the heart of God.

Its amazing!!! *contented sigh*

Ooooohhh....and guess who went on a date today?!! *smiling mischievously*

*in sing-song voice* I'm NOT TELLINNNGGG.......*now whistling*

My Weekend In Pictures (and words)

Thursday

I had entered one of my classic anti-social, don't want to see or talk to anyone, lock myself in and the whole world out, trapped in my mind modes.

I remained like that the entire day, burying myself in work, until the Bestie came and dragged me out of it in the evening.

She stayed a little, we gisted and basically chilled....I went right back into that mode as soon as she left.

Friday

Remained in that dangerous state all day...then sometime in the evening, couldn't make any headway on an article, so figured it might be because I have not breathed fresh air or interacted with anyone in quite a bit.

So I took a shower, summoned Gigi (my chariot/car) and headed to my neighbourhood Bar/Suya Spot for a beer and some random company.

My goodness, that was exactly what I needed!!

I absolutely love the thrill of making a pure human connection!! I'm sitting somewhere, no-one has a clue who I am, or even cares. I spent my evening having an interesting conversation and drinks with two random guys who don't know each other or me.

We talked about everything!! Nigeria, the coming Elections, traffic in Lagos, Blackberry groups...it was a refreshing time. Made even more interesting by the fact that we actually didn't know each other's names and only introduced ourselves as we parted ways.

It's really nice when you meet people and interact from a non-gender, non-status, non-anything perspective!! It's just purely human minds meeting and making a connection and we all go our seperate ways, impacted by the strangers we shared a small part of ourselves with.

I love it!!

My friend Kemi Alaiyemola (I call her Moggy-Lee) soon came to drag me out of the house after I returned home.

We went Base Lounge chilling...

Kemi Alaiyemola - The brain behind popular toning lotion, Kemi's Souffle

Moggy-Lee has to be one of the most generous people on this planet!! We've been friends since Queens' College, and even though I sometimes am convinced she's insane, she's always been my darling!!

I call her my Gold Rush also, as she always randomly gives me gold jewellry!! I'm talking like really expensive gold jewellry...in fact this weekend, she's given me two new pairs of shoes!!

So you understand what I mean about her generosity!!!

Kemi & I

We had a great time at Base Lounge as usual!! Not surprisingly, I was yet again captivated by a certain female dancing...you could tell the girl knew she was too bad, and was even trying to pretend that she wasn't aware that all eyes were on her, by focusing on her Blackberry the entire time!!

She was wearing a very short, tight skirt and a vest...yet she kept dancing and going to the floor, regardless of her short skirt. Then she'd be touching herself all provocatively...

Kai..sometimes, I feel sorry for guys sha!!

Her dancing was so legendary that Kemi and I were practising it in front of the mirror when we got back home!!

Before we got home though, we made a stop at a club where I witnessed a showdown that I would have said was impossible up until that point!!

There is only one word to describe what I witnessed....FAAAAJJIIIIII!!!!!

We got back home and just as we were about to sleep, I told Moggy-Lee to say good night to the Timbuktu's...the nuisance told them "Rest In Peace" instead!!

I almost sent her out of my house...can you imagine?!!

Saturday

My very good boyfriends, who are also a group of Fashion Designers called Onyx & Pearl, were showing their first collection at a Fashion Show/Competition called 'Sashay As We Say'...I went to show my love!!

I was sooo proud of them, as not only did they impress the heck out of the Judges with the edginess and freshness of their Collection, they also WON the award for Best Designers!!!

Oyakhire, 'Debayo, Seun & Dapo of ONYX & PEARL

The have brilliantly combined their individual strengths in Business, Media Marketing and Design, to form this working partnership!!

I have no doubt about how successful they'd be because their ALL really great guys, with the most wonderful hearts!!

I cringe in anticipation of the day she publishes that Interview...I'm shy!!!! *now covering my face and hiding under my desk*

Later went to hang out with the Bestie, and then eventually with Tones, who shared some wonderful news with me!! I'm soooo excited for her....nuff said!!

Then came back home, and it was time for a Family Portrait with the Timbuktu's...
