Shondrella Avery-Kester: An Ambassador for Africa

Enthusiasm. Eclecticism. Energetic.

Those were the three words that jumped out at me from the moment I laid my eyes on the ‘Secret Life of Bees’, ‘Déjà vu’ and ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ star as she walked into the Newscafe, venue of our meeting, with her sister-in-law in tow.

Shondrella Avery-Kester

Her down-to-earth nature and friendliness immediately warmed me to her. She has no airs about her, and addresses every single person with the same delight, charm and warm regard. I knew I was going to enjoy telling her story right from our very first conversation and I’m certain that by the time you’re through reading this, you’ll understand why.

Shondrella Avery grew up in South Central, Los Angeles; the first child in a large Middle-class family. Her benevolent Mother was a Foster Mum for 33 years, and so Shondrella was always the big-sister to tons of Foster children who lived with them all through her growing up years.

As a result, leadership came to her very easily, aside from the fact that she was a gawky, 6-footed teenager, and would have looked absolutely ridiculous lagging behind as a Follower. Boys were out of the question for the young Shondrella; which teenage boy could step up to a girl he’d have to ‘look up’ to?!

The Avery home was a very structured one; not the stereotype African-American family living in South Central. Her parents were educated, and understood the importance of giving their children the invaluable gift of a good education.

The Avery’s believed that a person did not have to become a product of their environment, and so made sure their children had the right foundation to rise above all that their environment expected of them.

Shondrella attended Private schools and from a tender age, was already being tutored in the Arts. She studied Chopin, Bach and performed in Shakespearean classics like Macbeth.

Her passion for Acting was ignited by her Education. However, her fine Education didn’t make her professional journey any easier, as she still had to work years and years of being an Extra, before getting any substantial roles.

The pressure to get a ‘Proper Job’ was soon upon her as being an Extra could definitely not pay the bills. The standard job for any Actress waiting on the ‘Big Break’ is to wait tables, but Shondrella was determined not to go through that Lane, and so decided to get a Corporate job while still pursuing her Acting career.

Patience is one virtue Shondrella has had to learn a great deal of, as trying to get ahead in Hollywood is no small feat, especially as she had determined within herself not to tow the path of Compromise.

Roles had to have purpose before she would accept them. Even the tiniest role as an Extra, had to have some meaning to it; and if it didn’t, Shondrella worked on that little role so hard that it stood out and was remembered by the audience.

It’s this same principle which also inspired her to take on the unconventional role of ‘LaFawnduh Lucas’ in the 2004 indie-comedy film, Napoleon Dynamite. Shondrella has refused roles that depicted the Stereotype and often mis-interpreted ‘Black Woman’, even though the money was good and tempting to her at the time.

She strongly believes in being purposeful in whatever she does, and acknowledges that “You can be on camera and not be purposeful”.

Judging by her Role choices and career progression, Shondrella sees herself as a ‘Black Meryl Streep’. The ‘Devil Wears Prada’ star is one of Shondrella’s all-time Hollywood Heroines, for many reasons including the fact that Meryl never conformed to the Hollywood mould of how she should look. Shondrella relates with Meryl Streep in that dimension, as she has also stood her ground to maintain her Individuality and remain true to herself.

Academy Award winner, Forrest Whitaker is also a personal hero of Shondrella’s. Her face lights up with affection and admiration as she speaks about their experiences together and the advice he had given her. She had followed Forrest’s acting journey from childhood and remains impressed by his choice of roles and Career direction.

Whitaker’s success inspires her that being true to who she is, even in her selection of roles, does pay off eventually. Like Forrest, she believes in feeding the soul by performing great material.

Her passion and dedication to the Art doesn’t go unnoticed, as she receives fan-mail from as far as Ukraine and Japan, from fans who appreciate the uniqueness of her choices and the purpose she gives to her characters.

Shondrella is happily married to a Nigerian gentleman, hence the Kester name, which she very proudly bears.

He has been a Rock to her and together they have built a healthy, honest relationship rooted in love and mutual respect of each other. They are still learning each other’s cultures, and Shondrella admits that it’s been quite interesting being assimilated into her new Nigerian heritage.

She calls her husband an Equalizer, and is happy about the fact that he is in an entirely different Industry, which allows him to take very good care of her and the family when she is out of work. She recognizes that at home she is a Wife first, and does not in any way bring up her Celebrity status around the house.

Shondrella is currently working on what she calls ‘The Shondrella Adventures’, a docu-series which is aimed at dispelling all the misconceptions African-Americans have of African women and Africa in general. According to her, we are all the same. Our experiences, our desires, our perceptions, are all the same. She wants people on both sides to see that through her experience.

As if to corroborate her claim about 'Sameness', there's my Toenails and Shondrella's fingernails boldly flying the 'Green' flag!!

She seeks to give people an African experience from the perspective of the people, and let them understand that all the negative ideas they have formed of Africa are false.

She is also excited about the soon to be released 2nd season of ‘Gillian In Georgia’, which also stars Jill Marie-Jones of ‘Girlfriends’.

Shondrella has a solid faith in God, which has been the foundation of all that she is and will become. She believes in completely letting go of the reins of life and allowing God to take over.

“Discontentment comes with going out of God’s way; Sustainability is from God”, she says thoughtfully.

This is the story of Shondrella Avery-Kester, a woman of the greatest substance. A true Nigerian.

Values Worth Living & Dying For

I stumbled across these words while doing some Research this morning. They are indeed some of the most beautiful words I've EVER read!! I want to share them with you...

Civil Rights Movement Leader, Martin Luther King Jr., speaking about what people should remember him for if they are present at his funeral:

“ I'd like somebody to mention that day that Martin Luther King Jr. tried to give his life serving others. I'd like for somebody to say that day that Martin Luther King Jr. tried to love somebody.

I want you to say that day that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day that I did try to feed the hungry.

I want you to be able to say that day that I did try in my life to clothe those who were naked.

I want you to say on that day that I did try in my life to visit those who were in prison. And I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity.

Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major. Say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter."

Martin Luther King Jr.

Great words from an astoundingly GREAT Leader..No matter what Guys, let's NEVER lose sight of what's truly Important.

A True Star - Chima Dirichukwu

Before Saturday, the name Chima Dirichukwu meant absolutely nothing to me!!

I was quite familiar with the face behind the name, because it is very hard to not notice him in the way he carries himself and goes about his WORK with dignity and finesse. He’s also quite good-looking too!

Chima is a Waiter at Ice-Cream factory, who touched my heart in a way that would remain with me for as long as I live.

Chima Dirichukwu

Being the Diva that I know I can sometimes be, I wanted a glass of water, and told Chima, who had been serving me since I arrived for my meeting, that I wanted my water served with ice and lemon in a wine glass.

Not sure if they had one of those available, seeing that it’s an Ice-cream shop and all, Chima asked if I would mind being served in a Water-glass just in case they didn’t have a wine glass.

I asked him to check for the wine-glass and if they didn’t have, then I’d settle for the Water-glass.

12 minutes later, and Chima had still not returned with my order. I got slightly irritated and was about getting up to go make a complaint, when Chima appeared, hurrying toward our table with a Wine-glass in his hand.

He was breathing fast and quickly apologized, saying that he took a bike all the way to Falomo to get me the wine-glass.

Speechless, I said to him that he didn’t have to go that far, I could have settled for the water-glass. Then he said the words that just completely numbed me:

“No you WANTED a wine glass, so I made sure I went to get it for you.”

It was official: for one of the few times in my life, I WAS SPEECHLESS!!

Speechless because such Customer Service is a NOVELTY in Nigeria…and I’m not even exaggerating.

Speechless because, a lot of Waiters here don’t have that kind of thorough attitude toward their job; they act most times like they’re doing you a favor.

By going to that extent to ensure Customer Satisfaction in a job that probably doesn’t even pay his basic needs, Chima Dirichukwu has shown himself to be not only Excellent at whatever he does, but also as a Great Guy.

He is My Star.

Thanks Chima, may ALL your dreams come to be.

Ladies, 1 Simple Step to feeling GREAT!!

After a Women’s meeting I attended recently, I was forced to ask myself a very serious question: Why is it so difficult for Women to appreciate the beauty in each other?

Most of us girls know that if a guy says you look great, no big deal, all well and good, but if another girl goes “Wow! You look AMAZING!!” chin up girl cos it’s got to be true!!

I think one of the reasons why it’s so difficult for us is because we immediately feel self-conscious in the presence of another beautiful woman. So a lot of girls would immediately look for some way to put the other girl down. “Her head's too big”, “Her make-up looks tacky”, “I’m sure her bag is fake”, “See her flabs....she's soo fat!!"

We always find something, anything to pull the person down just so we can feel better about ourselves. Why do we fear so much if another girl is better than us? If we are giving the best of ourselves every day, it wouldn’t matter to us because we already feel great about ourselves.

Beauty as we all probably know, is beyond the superficial. It is that inherent quality in a woman, or any other of God’s creatures, that is pleasing to the senses or spirit of an observer.

I think my friend, Seun Opaleye, is beautiful. Her gentleness, pureness of heart, and smile make her one of the most beautiful women I know.

Toni Tones’ forceful determination to achieve all of her set objectives makes her beautiful to me.

Temilade Onabanjo’s humility and simplicity is not only beautiful, but disarming.

Aisha Ibrahim’s naturally helpful nature makes her so effortlessly beautiful.

Ton Ekiyor’s intelligence and willingness to see the good in others makes her exquisite.

Tosyn Bucknor’s unrelenting enthusiasm for life will light up any dark place from even a great distance.

There is not enough space to mention the attributes of every beautiful woman I know or have ever come across.

But we can start this girls!! From now, this very moment, look at another woman, your friend, a stranger, someone you haven’t spoken to in years, and see her beauty. Tell her she is beautiful.

I assure you that the easiest way to feel great about oneself, is simply by making another person feel good about themselves.

It's that Girl with the Annoying Voice again!!

I have heard a lot of people talk recently about how annoyingly shrill Tosyn Bucknor’s voice is on the radio. In fact I have seen someone cringe irritably during an event that she was anchoring.
I don’t blame them, because Tosyn’s voice is indeed very high-pitched!!

As is everything else about her.

Her heart, her passion, her compassion, her zeal, her strength, her talent, her determination, her presence, her dress sense, there is nothing about Tosyn Bucknor that is either low-pitched or ordinary.

Her very life is an affront to Modern Science. By the sheer force of her passion, she rises everyday and grips the unsuspecting world with the justice of her cause and yes, her piercing voice, that arrests your attention whether you like it or not.

It is said that the greatest thing the devil ever did, was convince the world that he didn’t exist. Well, Tosyn Bucknor has got you fooled if you for one moment believe that her tiny frame, annoying voice, or even the composition of her genes, makes her anything less than who she truly is.

Whether as a writer, singer or media personality, what lies at the heart of this phenomenon called Tosyn Bucknor, is a heart that truly cares.

Her foundation, These Genes, is a sickle cell project that seeks to get young people living with the sickle cell genes to understand the physical and psychological implications of the often misunderstood disorder. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

By creating forums where these young people can get together and talk about their experiences living with it, Tosyn is giving them opportunity to live normal and fulfilled lives regardless of the sickle cell genes in them.

Her own childhood was spent mostly indoors because of her fledgling health, but that didn’t deter Tosyn. What better inspiration can the kids that benefit from her foundation have?
She relentlessly champions this cause, as well as entertaining and empowering thousands of young Nigerians daily, both through the media and her S.H.A.R.E network, bringing in her own way, relief to a pain-filled world.

Tosyn Bucknor is a light. Darkness is weary of being defeated by her.

AREA MAMAAAAA!!!!! I salute you.

Tosyn hosts the Top of the Morning show on Top Radio 90.9 from 6am-11am on week days.

I've found Out what makes Weird MC....WEIRD!!

I want to say a big ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ to Weird MC who celebrated her birthday at Nu Grotto this weekend.

She’s such a cool person and I know that even though I'd never met her before. I was by chance at Nu Grotto for drinks with a friend and it so happened that her party was there. So I crashed the party, technically.

It was full paparazzi outside with celebrities like OD, Ill, Zeal, Mode 9, Terry Tha Rapman and others were giving interviews on the red carpet.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The first person I saw when I walked in was Tosyn Bucknor the official Rockafella of the century, entertaining everyone on the dance floor with her militant steps. I really wish I had a camera with me so I could take pictures to show you. Anyway next time.

I was sitting in a little private lounge on the side where Kenny, D1, ID, Alariwo of Africa, Funke Kuti, Goldie, Amaechi Obi, and other very important industry people were being the Bigks Boyz and Girls, was fun watching them.

I really hate it when bouncers at clubs don’t do their research and know who certain people are before they try to bounce them from entering VIP. Or then again, if you are someone in the industry, and are still being bounced from entering VIP, you really should start considering a major career move.

So there I was sitting down and sipping on my Vodka mixed with Sprite and Red Bull, when Weird MC walks in and goes over to greet the celebrities who were there. You wouldn’t believe what happened next….she actually came over to my table to say hello to me!!

I was so touched because I’m a freaking nobody and she’s this huge music superstar. She sees me, doesn’t know me from Adam, and actually walks over to greet me!!
That’s like so freaking amazing, and one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen anyone do.

Coming from a society in which most people want to appear important and believes everyone should kiss their asses, such an action is truly the mark of someone who is...weird!!

There is a world of difference between a celebrity and a star. A star is defined by the positive impact made on the lives of everyday people.

Sola Idowu aka Weird MC is indeed a star.

P.S: Do you know any stars? I'd love for you to tell me about them..

I've Officially Been Toni-Toned

I had such a great day being Toni-Toned!!!

For those of you who don’t know what that is, it means having my photographs taken by the hottest fashion photographer right now. Being Toni Toned is soooo much fun because of the coolness of the photographer herself.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

She has a way of making you feel comfortable and drawing out the sexiness from you. at first I wasn’t such a fun ‘model’ to photograph, but she soon got me relaxed and showed me how to pose right to get the best shots.

So there I was all posing and summoning all my intensity for the camera. I learnt a few tricks from her about how to make my booty look more alluring and also how to pose in weird positions while making it seem like I’m sooooo comfortable.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

After about two hours of straight posing, I was ready to strip my clothes off and just fall back into my un-sophisticated ways, but Toni was just getting started with me. Like a true professional, she got me all excited again and made me feel so sexy; I bet even Naomi would have come to get some tips from me if she saw my poses.

I’m so excited, I can’t wait to see my pictures; I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t recognize myself after she has worked on them in her obsessive perfectionist mode.

Now I’m just gonna relax and let Hiro Nakamura (of Heroes) entertain me with his unbelievable cuteness.

Weight Adventure Update: Lots of exercise achieved while doing impossible poses; mid-day lunch of yam and eggs while preparing for the photo shoot. It’s Friday night, I think I’ll begin the night with my supposed weekly 8units of alcohol.

Abeg make I enjoy jare, na only one life I get!!!

P.S.: Catch Toni Tones live on HiTV as she has a photo shoot with the girls of the Koko mansion tomorrow.
